This summer, Stelios and the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation joined other well-known Londoners in contributing to the Evening Standard Dispossessed Fund in the fight against poverty in London launched by the Evening Standard group in July 2010. As Stelios himself said " I am very pleased I was given the opportunity to help some of the neediest people in London. This is the city that I arrived as a student in 1984 at the LSE and built most of my businesses from London. Glad to be giving a little something back."

John Pickup last year's winner of the Stelios Award for Disabled Entrepreneurs in the UK speaks at the inaugural Cass Alumni World Forum.

With over 400 people attending the event in London, over 300 attending events overseas, and more than 650 watching the London panel debates unfold online, the day proved to be a huge success.
The London Forum was designed around sharing ideas, networking and debating with world-leading business thinkers through lectures, masterclasses and an evening reception at the Museum of London. The masterclasses were hosted by Cass Careers and Professors Roger Steare, Dirk Nitzsche and Charles Baden-Fuller.
John Pickup, CEO and Founder of Amputees In Action and winner of the Stelios Award for Disabled Entrepreneurs in the UK 2009, finished off the evening with an inspiring speech about entrepreneurship, disability and his incredible journey.
Rekar Bek (current Cass Stelios Scholar MSc International Accounting & Finance 2009/2010) reports back on the day: ‘Besides meeting many influential business leaders and exchanging significant contacts I was fascinated by the facts which I learnt both from the conference and the master classes. During the day, I attend two conferences. The first was the changing face of business in a post-recession world. I was able to hear first hand the impact the recession has had on the global economy and how the emerging market may have benefitted from it. I leant that whilst some economies faced negative growth, some emerging markets grew too fast and their fiscal/monetary policy was designed to deliberately slow the growth down. The second panel discussed the qualities of Entrepreneurship, I discovered that out of the 70,000 self-made millionaires in the UK 49% are actually dyslexic! Thus learning how a dyslexic brain works is worth investing your time into. Later in the afternoon, after a delicious lunch meal of course, I attended two master classes. The first covered the secret of successful networking; I was amazed by the fact that the first 15 seconds is the most important part of contact relationships. Thus it was vital to learn how to do this right. The second master class was on happiness at work and how it matters. I learn how one can really enjoy their work and the link between happiness at work and success is stronger than we think! Finally the evening ended with an amazing treat at the Museum of London. I got the chance to unwind the intense day by enjoying a lovely dinner with a few of the other Cass Stelios Scholars, and I got the privilege to listen to the wisdom of an inspirational entrepreneur John Pickup CEO and Founder of Amputees in Action.

On 21 July the Three Ladies Team - one of the five winning teams of the Stelios Award for Business Cooperation in Cyprus - 2009 - launch their third report on the economic benefits resulting from reunification on the island of Cyprus. In "The Day After - lll" the three economists - Praxoula Antoniadou Kyriacou, Ozlem Oguz Cilsal and Fiona Mullen - look at the benefits to the immediate geographical region, especially Turkey and Greece, derived from opening up trade between the island's communities in the north and south. Based on hard statistical data analysis, the authors argue the case for an exponential peace dividend in Cyprus.

Stelios receives retraction and apology from Ryanair and Michael O’Leary

Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou has today received a full retraction and apology from Ryanair and Chief Executive Michael O'Leary for running an advert at the beginning of this year suggesting that Stelios was lying about easyJet's punctuality.

The advert featured a picture of Stelios as Pinocchio and referred to him as "easyJet's - Mr Late Again" and called on "Stelios...to stop hiding the truth" about easyJet's flight delays and resume publishing weekly details of easyJet's on-time performance.

Stelios issued High Court proceedings against Ryanair and Michael O'Leary after the advert was published claiming that the statements made about him were libellous.

Michael O'Leary and Ryanair have today unreservedly apologised to Stelios in open court and in writing for these remarks in so far as they related to him personally and suggested that he was lying about the matter. They accept that Stelios is not responsible for the non publication of easyJet's on-time statistics and was not involved in the decision by easyJet management to cease publishing the figures.

"It is not very often that someone as arrogant and as powerful as O'Leary is forced to apologise to someone else in public and in writing. I took this legal action to protect my reputation. I am not a liar and that statement was libellous.

I would like to dedicate this little victory to all those members of the travelling public who have suffered verbal abuse and hidden extras at the hands of O'Leary."

A full page apology at the expense of Ryanair will run in today's Daily Telegraph and Guardian and will be repeated in those newspapers next week. It will also appear on Ryanair's website.

Michael O'Leary and Ryanair have undertaken not to publish the advert again and have agreed to pay Stelios damages and legal costs in settlement of the libel claim.

The sum offered was £50,100 which Stelios has accepted. He will donate the money to his philanthropic foundation and it has been agreed it will be used for the Stelios Award for Disabled Entrepreneurs in the UK - 2010 which is run in partnership with Leonard Cheshire, the disability charity.
